"Simply Stated" Process

This was one of my first realized costume designs. It was pretty hard to do as the choreographer wanted it to be more abstract and there wasn’t really any themes or story to it. I believe I gathered my inspiration based on things the choreographer told me he wanted. It was difficult getting the costumes to a point that I liked because I initially started off with nude unitards that I was adding appliques to. But while I thought I would like how that looked based on what I was picturing, it just wasn’t working for me. Then we tried spray painting designs by placing lace on the unitards. They still looked odd to me on stage. Finally we decided to fabric dye the unitards magenta and I feel like they ended up “popping” more onstage. I made the arm drapes and arm wraps for them, but we purchased the leg wraps.
